The numbered line summarizes the stop order. The geographical map plots an approximate path and is not turn-by-turn navigation. Distances are approximate road ranges and exclude flights, trains, boats, and ferries. Actual distance varies by hotel, chosen stops, traffic, road access, and detours.

Day-by-day itinerary

Use this as a practical starting point. You can add, remove, or reorder stops to match your flights, interests, pace, and current local conditions.

Day 1

Arrive in Marrakech

Transfer to your accommodation and rest. Overnight in Marrakech.

Approximate road distance: 10–25 km

Day 2

Marrakech

Set aside a full city day; a local walking guide can be arranged separately. Overnight in Marrakech.

Approximate road distance: 0–25 km

Day 3

Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

Cross the Atlas only when conditions allow, with a planned stop at Ait Ben Haddou. Overnight around Ouarzazate.

Approximate road distance: 195–230 km

Day 4

Skoura and the Dades Valley

Choose a limited set of stops rather than visiting every kasbah. Overnight in the Dades area.

Approximate road distance: 130–180 km

Day 5

Tinghir to Merzouga

Agree any Todra stop early and leave enough time for the accommodation transfer. Overnight near Merzouga.

Approximate road distance: 270–330 km

Day 6

Merzouga at your own pace

Use a local rest or activity day. Confirm any specialist excursion with its operator. Overnight near Merzouga.

Approximate road distance: 0–50 km

Day 7

Merzouga to Midelt

Make this a transfer day with planned breaks. Overnight in Midelt.

Approximate road distance: 260–310 km

Day 8

Midelt to Fez

Continue north, keeping optional stops proportionate to the road conditions. Overnight in Fez.

Approximate road distance: 190–230 km

Day 9

Fez

Explore the historic medina on foot with a separately agreed guide if desired. Overnight in Fez.

Approximate road distance: 0–25 km

Day 10

Depart from Fez

Confirm the flight airport and allow a suitable pickup buffer.

Approximate road distance: 15–30 km

Use different arrival and departure cities

This suggested journey begins in Marrakech and ends in Fez. Compare flight arrangements before booking the route: returning to the original airport introduces another substantial travel sector. The desert portion takes several days, not a quick detour. If your flights must both use Marrakech, shorten the northern section and ask your driver to propose a realistic return with an overnight break.

Separate the road transfer from the desert stay

The ordinary road journey ends at a clearly agreed meeting point near Merzouga. Ask the camp or accommodation provider how the final transfer works, what vehicle is used, what happens to large luggage, and what is included in dinner and breakfast. Do not assume a passenger van can drive over dunes. A camel activity, specialist off-road excursion and camp night are separate items unless expressly included.

Break the northern transfer

After the desert nights, this plan stops in Midelt before continuing to Fez. That spreads the road travel instead of treating the Merzouga–Fez sector as a sightseeing day with unlimited stops. Mountain weather and road access can alter the sequence. Reserve accommodation with workable change terms, travel in daylight where practical, and keep the final Fez day clear for walking rather than another long excursion.

Local route decisions that matter

Settle these details before fixing hotels or comparing driver offers.

Accommodation access
Many historic-centre stays need a specific nearby vehicle meeting point. Confirm luggage help and walking distance with your accommodation.
Road estimates
Distances shown are broad planning estimates, not measured navigation instructions or guaranteed driving times. Ask the driver to check the exact hotels, stops and current road conditions.

Questions to settle before booking

  • What is the exact pickup point, departure time and overnight base for each day?
  • Which fuel, tolls, parking, waiting hours and driver overnight expenses are included?
  • Does the proposed vehicle fit every passenger, suitcase and requested child seat?
  • Which visits need separate tickets, a walking guide, or a specialist operator?

Practical planning notes

  • Keep long road sectors as travel days, with planned breaks rather than an unlimited list of stops.
  • Compare written inclusions instead of only the lowest advertised daily rate.
  • Keep optional shopping and activity stops optional; agree changes before committing.
  • Check current conditions close to departure and retain flexibility around mountain travel.

Check current official information

Entry rules, attraction access, transport schedules, road conditions, and local restrictions can change. Recheck the details that affect your dates before paying for non-refundable arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private driver the same as a tour guide?

Not necessarily. Confirm whether your quote covers transport only or also includes a suitably qualified guide for specific visits. Walking tours, trekking and specialist desert excursions should be described and priced separately unless the offer explicitly includes them.

Can I change this suggested itinerary?

Yes. These are independent planning suggestions. Tell drivers which flights and hotel nights are fixed, which stops matter most and what can be removed. Request a revised written quote when the route or required service changes.

Should I book the cheapest quote?

Compare the same service first: vehicle size, luggage, dates, route, waiting time, inclusions and cancellation terms. Availability and the final price depend on the drivers who respond to your request; this guide does not promise a particular price or response count.
